Fire Life Safety (FLS)

Fire Protection Measures

It is of utmost importance for every individual to be fully aware of the conditions that may cause a fire emergency and thereby endanger lives, especially those of students in classes and residential dormitories. The major causes of school fires, for example, are overloaded electrical circuits, misuse of water heaters, mishandling of flammable liquids [e.g. alcohol based perfumes and colognes], improper storage of combustible materials in the school compound and arson.

Fire Safety And Response Awareness Training

There has been an endemic rise in the incidences of school fires in Kenya for the last 20 years. This has resulted in the unfortunate loss of lives and property, maiming and scarring of many of those involved, and the loss of valuable learning time. As a result of the above incidences, the Government and Ministry of Education gave a ministerial directive that ALL schools must install fire suppression equipment in their premises. This directive raises the following questions;

1. Are your staff and students adequately trained and prepared to use this equipment in case of a fire emergency?
2. Have your students and staff trained in fire safety and response awareness?
3. Can your staff and students navigate themselves to safety during a fire emergency?

Fire Drills

Fire drills are a compulsory exercise in all school, living and workplaces as required by law.  Scarlatech General and Build conducts comprehensive fire safety drills so as to ensure that everyone in your premises has a higher level of fire alertness, and therefore sufficiently equipped to mitigate any fire emergency, to ensure lives and property are secured.  A successful evacuation exercise will therefore depend directly on the level of preparedness.  Different case studies have confirmed that a trained group will act more calmly and professionally under emergency situations, thereby avoiding panic, which in most caused have caused more damage than the fire itself.

A fire drill stands as a pivotal component in the safety strategy of any establishment, preparing occupants for the unforeseen event of a fire. Their importance cannot be overstated, as they significantly contribute to the safety and well-being of individuals by ensuring a well-practiced response in times of crisis. But how often should these drills be conducted to ensure efficacy without causing undue disruption? Fire Emergency and Evacuation

Move away from fire and smoke. Close doors and windows behind you, if time permits. Before opening a door, place the back of your hand on the door to check for heat. If cool, slowly check the door handle for heat and proceed to exit. Do not stop to pick personal items. Once out of the building, assembly at the designated fire assembly point and carry out a roll call to ensure everyone is accounted for. Call emergency services on 999 or 112.
